I surprised my Dad tonight! I served this cake for dessert and he wanted to know how I made it!
I thought for a minute to use Dan’s answer for how things happen….”F M”……but I made him guess.
He guessed I used a knife to swirl it.
My mom said that wasn’t right, but all along SHE though it was Cheesecake!

Here’s the scoop.

This is NavySEALtobe’s favorite cake. He asks for it for every birthday. It takes a long time to make and is always wavey gravey. I don’t really like making it, but we all love how it TASTES.

I found this StripeyCake on Tastespotting, I believe. I loved how it looked and wanted to try it.
I prepared two flavors of homemade cake mix batter.
I prepared my Martha Stewart Cake Pan with some Parchment Paper and greased it all up real good.
Then, the magic part.
You put a 1/2 cup measure or so of color 1, then another scoop of color two. And on and on.
No swirling. It spreads on its own. Be patient. Pretty soon, you get….

Those of us who live in God’s Country….the midwest….know that the green fields we drive past every day are either “beans” or “corn”. Those fields get planted, they grow, and the field is harvested and the product goes….well, where does it go?!

I already knew about Cargill’s corn based product, PLA, that is produced in my town, Blair, NE. We are so excited about Cargill’s plant based products that we purchased NatureWorks pillows as gifts for all our friends and business associates one Christmas several  years ago.

I recently came across a wonderful woman on Twitter who was talking about Cargill’s SOY based products that the furniture industry was using to make into foam for furniture instead of petroleum-based foam. GEENYUS! At first, I thought this was the product made in Blair, and I sent a message to Leslie, asking her if it was.

She responded back to me!

No, this was BiOH, a SOY based product. Blair  produces a CORN based product.
Oh well. It is STILL a great idea!

So I started following links she TWEETED about and found that MANY furniture manufacturers are using BiOH.
That product even has a BLOG!
I entered the contest they are running right now and I WON a $100 VISA gift card.
Just for expressing my honest opinion about a wonderful new product.

I am starting to EAT local and LIVE local, but I’m not sure I was thinking of products in my home as LOCAL and environmentally friendly. The more we are educated, the smarter consumers we become. I plan to start reading the tags even more on pillows and furniture and bedding that I buy from now on. I plan to check the manufacturers who are using BiOH in their foam and look at those websites for future furniture purchases. And I plan to ASK for products with BiOH. The blog also has a “locator” to find stores that actually SELL these items along with some great links.

You two have loved each other and been an example to ME for 49 years.
And I was an example to MY children.
And SHE saw how to love a spouse and they’ll do the same.

Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad!
