Archives for the month of: September, 2007

The restaurant my girl-cousins own, Johnny’s Cafe, was in the news again!

Several Omaha eateries made the cut in Midwest Living’s "Best of the Midwest" issue this month.
Along with some wineries in western Iowa and Nebraska, the magazine noted WheatFields and 11-Worth Cafe for breakfast, Délice for coffee, Flatiron Cafe and The French Café for lunch, Johnny’s Cafe for dinner, and Eileen’s Colossal Cookies for dessert.

There are a few places on that list I’d love to try!

We’re spending some time in Lincoln these days, participating in the Nebraska Diplomats Passport to Nebraska Weekend.

The Passport to Nebraska Weekend, September 28-29: Cornhusker Hotel,
Lincoln.
Passport Weekend is the signature event of the Nebraska
Diplomats.  Business prospects from around the nation and world are
treated to our unparalleled Midwestern hospitality.
Day one of the
weekend begins with the annual meeting and CEO Roundtable followed by a
cocktail reception and awards banquet.
Day two is punctuated with a
tailgate party at the Governor’s residence and a Husker football game.

Our good friend, Mick Mines, received an award at the banquet…Ambassador Plenipotentiary.
I had to look up Plenipotentiary, and it means…….(according to Wikipedia…)

The word plenipotentiary (from the Latin, plenus + potens, full + power) has two meanings.
As a noun, it refers to a person who has "full powers". In particular, the term commonly refers to a diplomat who is fully authorised to represent their government as a prerogative (e.g. ambassador).
As an adjective, plenipotentiary refers to that which confers "full powers".

Mick deserves this honor, along with his cute wife, Katie. Congrats, Mick, and I"ll certainly miss your weekly newsletters from the Unicameral.

While Dan attended meetings, I took his cool car (as opposed to my UNcool MomVan) and, using my list of antique stores and the map feature of the vehicle, went to several antique shops. I had a great time!

I’m pretty sure that Santa needs to bring me one of them thar map thingamajigs for MY vehicle!!!!

And, tomorrow, I’m tailgating with the Gov and Sally!!!

.photo added AFTER the tailgate!…..here’s our best man and Megan’s Godfather, Tim Sully, with the Governor Dave, Sally, and our other friend Dave Barnum! It was a great lunch and an even GREATER game because Nebraska beat ISU.

Doesn’t he look sick?

He says he has a sore throat. It could be a fever.
Or….
It could be he was standing in line for several minutes at GameStop in the dripping rain…..at MIDNIGHT.

His sore throat MAY be related to all the nerds who were also in line and were SMOKING…..

But Matt says he’s just got a bad case of…

HALO FEVER!
The cure is 24 straight hours of Mountain Dew and resting on the couch with your new game, a high-definition television set, and surround sound!!!
How can he POSSIBLY go to physics class tomorrow?!!!

Our high school does homecoming wrong.
They have no floats…..instead, they decorate windows downtown.
There aren’t any carmel apples.
They don’t announce King and Queen until Saturday night…..instead, they should be announced at the pep rally after the parade.
The have a dance on Saturday night….instead, the dance should be AFTER the football game!
They dress odd. They boys wear khakis and golf shirts and the girls wear prom dresses….instead, it should be one way or the other!
These two looked great!

I know I show alot of pictures of my favorite drummer. I can’t help it. I’m a frustrated drummer. My mom was a drummer. My daughter is a drummer…(she would say PERCUSSIONIST) and he’s a drummer, too. And I think you should get MAJOR KUDOS for carrying a HUGE drum in front of you for more than a mile in a parade…walking and drumming at the same time…..ALL WHILE NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE IN FRONT OF YOU!!!

See him up there, in the middle, on the bottom step?

I love it that he always catches my eye at parades.
I love it that HE knows we are there.
I love it that he appreciates we are there and is happy to see us.

My Sweet Matt.

Dead priest’s wallet stolen at mortuary

Monsignor
Edgar Wortmann was carrying the church’s keys — and his wallet — when
he collapsed Aug. 31 and the 85-year-old priest died a short time
later. Later, Wortmann’s keys and wallet were stolen from the John A.
Gentleman mortuary and the thief racked up nearly $3,000 on the
priest’s debit card.

I did not know this priest. He collapsed while saying a funeral mass. I can’t imagine the trauma involved with that.

Some days, the faith is harder to keep than others.
But, there’s always OJ……..
