Several years ago, Dan and I got to take our second favorite vacation. We leisurely drove to Phoenix to deliver a car to a relative. We took any road we chose. This road trip was made possible by My Mother-in-Law who babysat our kids whenever I needed her.
We saw signs along the road for a tourist trap called "The Big Well". We kept seeing signs.
So, we decided to go see The Big Well.
And it was hard to find….but we found it.
We leaned over the railing and looked down into The Big Well, the largest hand-dug well in the United States. What a memorable experience.
Well, the REALLY memorable experience was that we bought some Big Well Souveniers and in our excitement LEFT THEM at the gift shop.
Oh well, they were probably gone forever.
A few weeks later, a small box arrived in the mail. I opened it and saw our little souveniers. And a note from that gift shop.
Such nice service. Such nice people.
I read today that this town, Greensburg, Kansas, was the town pretty much demolished in the tornado a few days ago.
The fate of the town’s claim to fame the
world’s biggest hand dug well was unknown because it was buried under
a mountain of debris; the gift store at the well had disappeared.
How sad I am for that community. I’m going to keep following this story.
