Archives for the month of: May, 2007

Several years ago, Dan and I got to take our second favorite vacation. We leisurely drove to Phoenix to deliver a car to a relative. We took any road we chose. This road trip was made possible by My Mother-in-Law who babysat our kids whenever I needed her.

We saw signs along the road for a tourist trap called "The Big Well". We kept seeing signs.
So, we decided to go see The Big Well.
Bigwell

And it was hard to find….but we found it.
We leaned over the railing and looked down into The Big Well, the largest hand-dug well in the United States. What a memorable experience.

Wellogo

Well, the REALLY memorable experience was that we bought some Big Well Souveniers and in our excitement LEFT THEM at the gift shop.

Oh well, they were probably gone forever.

A  few weeks later, a small box arrived in the mail. I opened it and saw our little souveniers. And a note from that gift shop.

Such nice service. Such nice people.

I read today that this town, Greensburg, Kansas, was the town pretty much demolished in the tornado a few days ago.

The fate of the town’s claim to fame  the
world’s biggest hand dug well  was unknown because it was buried under
a mountain of debris; the gift store at the well had disappeared.

Greensburg

How sad I am for that community. I’m going to keep following this story.

We took TheBoy out tonight to meet a Navy hero…..Rear Admiral Richard Mauldin.  He is currently Director for Operational Plans and Joint Force Development. He works for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He develops war plans. He’s from Nebraska and spoke informally about his early days as a young officer, working and taking classes and dealing with his young and growing family. And he took the time to politely and calmly talk to everyone in the room, including a young man who has hopes and dreams of becoming a Navy Seal.

Several people were in attendance at the Press Club at the top of the First National Bank Building in downtown Omaha. It is an incredibly beautiful restaurant and location. You can see out the windows as far as Nebraska and Iowa will let you.

I know this photo is dark. But who cares.
Look at his face.
Look at his eyes.
He was watching that man in the uniform tell his story. Matt stood a little taller and was a little quieter but was just as respectful and determined as ever.
Maybe more.
And right now, he has the business card of the Rear Admiral from Nebraska in his pocket.

MissFoofala tagged me. It said so right thar in her blog.
"Lastly, I tag you dear reader. Play along…be a good sport!"
Awwww. She called me a dear…

Here are the rules…. each player starts with 7 random facts/habits
about themselves.
People who are tagged need to write on their own blog
about their seven things, as well as these rules.
At the end of your
blog, you need to choose 7 people to get tagged and list their names.
Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them that they have been
tagged and to read your blog!

Seven Random Things About Myself…

1. I own just about every magazine published.
I save them for about 6 months, and read them at least once a week. I thumb through them, fold down pages, tear out pages, file the pages…I moved several boxes of magazines when we moved here from another house. I purge them about 3 times a year. I store them in Longaberger Baskets….another weakness. PS. The Stain Color of the woodwork in my house is based on the Longaberger Basket stain color.

2. Every morning…cup of plain old coffee with a swish of Bailey’s and a swirl of Half and Half.
My milkman delivers it once a week. I don’t even have to leave my house!!!
I’ve never had a latte or cappuccino. I like it plain and simple.

3. I listen to talk radio more than music radio.
I don’t even know any top hits right now. I don’t have an ipod. I don’t know how to download music. IF I listen to music, it’s the 70′s music channel….from back when music was GOOD.

4. I’ve never had my eyebrows "done".
Don’t even really pluck ‘em. One of my goals this year or so is to have this done. To see if it helps…..!

5. I make bread every day in my bread machine.
And I still make my son’s lunch every day for him. I enjoy doing it FOR him, but I better start learnin’ that boy to cook for himself.

6. I want to learn Photoshop.
I’ve even taken some classes. And it helped. But I don’t work hard enough at it everyday. I KNOW what I want the stuff to look like, I just don’t know how to do it. I just wish I KNEW it.

7. I have about 15 tubes of lipstick.
Stashed in drawers, purses, baskets all over. Same color. Number 230 Revlon Fleshtone Creme.

I’m tagging Miley, Laura (my oldest friend), MyNaybor MissKraftFairy who makes such beautiful things so I don’t have to, MissMegan, and TheTeacher.
